Shrek 5 Trailer Sparks Debate Over New Character Designs
The trailer for the upcoming Shrek 5 movie has left fans divided, with many questioning the updated animation style that gives the iconic characters a new look. The short teaser, which lasts only 27 seconds, showcases familiar faces like Shrek, Donkey, Princess Fiona, and Pinocchio, alongside a new character, Felicia, the grown-up daughter of Shrek and Fiona. Zendaya voices Felicia, while Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy are set to reprise their original roles.
While the teaser has generated excitement for the return of the Shrek franchise, the character designs have raised some concerns. Some fans have criticized the updated facial features of the characters, which appear different from their classic 2001 look. There’s been a backlash on social media, with many referring to the new designs as “disrespectful to the original style” and even comparing the changes to the infamous 2019 Sonic the Hedgehog redesign.
Oli Hyatt, head of Blue Zoo Animation, weighed in on the issue, explaining to the BBC that fans’ strong reactions are often a result of the franchise's nostalgic value. "The original Shrek generation is now grown up, and there's a sense of attachment to the old designs," Hyatt said. "When changes are made, there's an immediate feeling of ‘This isn’t what I remember.’"
Despite the criticism, Hyatt pointed out that the advancements in animation technology could explain the differences in appearance. He noted that improvements in CGI and rendering techniques have allowed for more realistic and visually polished designs. "The core style of Shrek hasn’t changed much, but the colors and vibrancy have evolved, which is a reflection of how animation has advanced," Hyatt said.
In the brief trailer, Shrek, Fiona, and their daughter Felicia gather around a magic mirror and ask, “Who’s the fairest of them all?” The mirror humorously declares Shrek as the answer, showing him in a series of funny poses, including wearing glasses and dancing in a tight catsuit, referencing popular internet memes.
Felicia, who was first introduced in Shrek the Third (2007), is now an adult, and fans are eager to see her role in the upcoming movie. The Shrek universe was teased to return at the end of the 2022 Puss in Boots sequel, building anticipation for Shrek 5.
Though some fans have expressed disappointment, Hyatt believes the backlash will subside once the full film is released. “Shrek has always been about humor and being a little gross, so as long as the script and characters are strong, fans will continue to enjoy it,” Hyatt said.
Shrek 5 is slated for release in December 2026, following the events of Shrek Forever After (2010). Fans are eager to see how the beloved characters and the unique humor of the franchise will continue to evolve in this next installment.
