Francis Ford Coppola Named Worst Director at Razzies for Megalopolis

Legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola has been awarded the title of Worst Director at this year’s Razzie Awards for his self-financed film Megalopolis. The announcement came just two days before the Oscars, where Hollywood’s finest are celebrated.

In a surprising twist, Coppola, known for his iconic works such as The Godfather trilogy, accepted the accolade with a sense of pride. "I am thrilled to accept this award at a time when so few have the courage to challenge the mainstream trends of contemporary filmmaking," he wrote in an Instagram post.

The Razzie Awards, often described as the "ugly cousin to the Oscars," celebrate the year’s worst films, with Megalopolis taking the top spot in the Worst Director category. The movie, an ambitious fantasy epic starring Adam Driver, Shia LaBeouf, Aubrey Plaza, and Nathalie Emmanuel, reportedly cost Coppola $120 million (£95 million). The film was also surrounded by controversy after Lionsgate withdrew its trailer for using fabricated quotes from real critics praising Coppola’s past work.

Despite the backlash, Coppola remained defiant, emphasizing his commitment to pushing boundaries in an industry that often favors risk-free ventures. In his Instagram post, he stated, "In this wreck of a world today, where art is rated as if it were professional wrestling, I chose not to follow the gutless rules of an industry afraid of taking risks." He also added, "Box office is only about money, and like war, stupidity, and politics, it has no true place in our future."

The win comes almost exactly 50 years after Coppola claimed the Best Director Oscar for The Godfather Part II.

Meanwhile, Madame Web, a Spider-Man Universe film, dominated the Razzie Awards, scooping up three awards, including Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay, and Worst Actress for Dakota Johnson. The movie, which follows a paramedic with arachnid-based psychic powers, was criticized for its confusing tone and underwhelming performances. Johnson’s portrayal in the film was slammed in several one-star reviews.

The sequel Joker: Folie à Deux also faced criticism, winning Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off, or Sequel, and Worst Screen Combo for the pairing of Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. While Joker 2 was eagerly awaited, it failed to meet the expectations of many critics.

In other Razzie news, Pamela Anderson received the Razzie Halo Award for her performance as a fading dancer in The Last Showgirl. Jon Voight was named Worst Supporting Actor for his role in Megalopolis, along with performances in Reagan, Shadow Land, and Strangers. Unfrosted also claimed multiple wins, with Jerry Seinfeld earning Worst Actor and Amy Schumer receiving Worst Supporting Actress.

The Razzie Awards are known for poking fun at the industry’s most critically panned films, and while the accolades are often met with humor, this year’s winners have certainly sparked a lot of conversations.
